Happy New Year on behalf of every one of us at Extra Inning Softball!
It’s been an interesting last couple of years in fastpitch softball:
- In 2020, COVID’s impact was the story as high school and club seasons were cancelled as well as the Women’s College World Series and the NPF while Tokyo Olympics were pushed into 2021.
- In 2021, there was a more normal schedule with the Tokyo Olympics played after being postponed from the year before, Athletes Unlimited played Year 2 and, at the college level Oklahoma took the NCAA DI National Championship
- So what was noteworthy about 2022? Perhaps the biggest impact was on the college level where terms not heard of a few years ago, like “Transfer Portal” or “NIL” (for Name, Image & Likeness), have become hugely important. Also on the college side, we saw the winningest coach ever in NCAA history retire and a powerhouse program win a second DI title in a row.
For us at EIS, it was another strong year as we set all-time highs in number of subscribers and number of stories published with more than five per day on average.
On January 28, it will mark the 5th anniversary of when Extra Inning Softball posted our first story and in that half decade we’ve published over 6,000 articles!
We have some big plans coming up this year as we continue to feature and honor these amazing athletes, coaches and families and write about what makes these people so compelling on and off the playing fields!
Below you’ll find our complete list of the Top 15 Softball Stories of 2022Â as well as 15 others we felt were in the running too (listed in random order).
Finally, on behalf of our entire staff, I’d like to wish everyone a happy and successful 2023… may it be our best year yet!
