WBSC U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup: Team USA Blanks Canada 12-0, Gets Third Perfect Game

Team USA waves to the fans Tuesday night at the WBSC U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup in Irvine, California.

The U-19 Women’s National Team (WNT) captured its fourth straight victory of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) U-19 Women’s Softball World Cup with a 12-0, four inning win over No. 3 Canada.

Megan Faraimo (Vista, Calif.) and Lexi Kilfoyl (Land O’Lakes, Fla.) combined for Team USA’s third perfect game this tournament to keep the U.S. as one of the two undefeated teams left.

Faraimo was lights out yet again in the circle tossing eight strikeouts in three shutout innings of work. She has 20 strikeouts on seven innings pitched and has retired every batter faced in order in her two appearances at the World Cup so far.

“I’m just happy that we continue to get better every day. We’re using our training and our preparation leading up to the game to continue to improve and keep sharp on what we need to keep sharp on,” said U-19 WNT Head Coach, Heather Tarr (Redmond, Wash./Head Coach at Washington).

“The pitching has been dominant and we are just trying to continue to get better and just keep this thing simple and play our best game in the very end of this tournament.”

Kilfoyl entered the game in the fourth inning and made quick work of the final three batters inducing three straight ground balls to secure the win.

“When I go in I just kind of have the mindset of get in and get out and I just go in and do what I do best and get ground balls,” Kilfoyl said.

“Because of the defense I have behind me, I am able to work that and know that if the balls do get in play they can do what they do best and just get out of there.”

While the pitching has been lights out for the U.S., the Eagles have been just as dominant in the batter’s box.

The U.S. recorded 11 hits from eight different batters with a two-run home run from Jadelyn Allchin (Fountain Valley, Calif.) in the top of the second to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.

“My teammates told me to be looking for the inside and so I was looking for nothing but that and I got the pitch,” Allchin said. “I think it gave us the motivation to keep it going and just past down the bat.”

Charla Echols (Newnan, Ga.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and two singles to drive in three of the team’s 12 runs.

Echols is tied for the most RBIs in the tournament with Japan’s Haruka Sumitani at seven. Bailey Dowling (St. Joseph, Ill.) also had a good showing at the plate today going 2-for-3 with two singles.

Team USA will face No. 4 Puerto Rico on August 14 at 8 p.m. PST / 10 p.m. CST with the opportunity to advance to 5-0 in tournament play.
