If you followed the impressive summer last year of the PA Strikers 14U team, you’ll remember that the team led by head coach Camille Hayes finished 9th at TC/USA Nationals and then 5th at PGF Nationals.
The team is now playing at the 16U level and one of the key members of last year’s team who is also being considered one of the top 2022 prospects for the Extra Elite 100 is Delaney Smith, a catcher/first baseman who Coach Hayes says, “was a key factor from the plate as well as behind in in our Strikers’ super successful 2018 season.”
With another national schedule planned for the 2019 summer season, arguably one of the most robust of any team from the Northeast, Hayes says of her standout freshmen and their teammates, “They are training hard to prove they can compete with the best players and the most talented teams from anywhere in the country.”
Delaney is the younger sister of Lacy Smith, the outstanding senior at the University of Virginia who leads the Cavaliers in batting average (.413), home runs (15) and RBIs (43) as well as several other offensive categories.
Unlike her older sibling, who plays the infield, hits and pitches as a righty, Delaney is a left-handed catcher. According to her coach, the high school freshman at Manheim Township in Lancaster, Pennsylvania has a “cannon arm and innate catcher’s instincts. We dare teams to try to steal on her!”
