High School Championship Event News: Roosevelt Rallies Past Los Al in CIF-SS Finals (May 21, 2022)

CIF-SOUTHERN SECTION SOFTBALL FINALS

AT BILL BARBER PARK IN IRVINE, CA

SATURDAY, MAY 21, RESULTS

Roosevelt of Eastvale, CA, 5, Los Alamitos, CA, 4: History was made when the Mustangs rallied to beat the Griffins, 5-4, in the Division 1 championship game. Oh yeah, there was a dramatic ending too.

Roosevelt stranded nine batters and trailed Los Alamitos, 4-1, heading into the bottom of the seventh. Cal Baptist-bound 3B/C/UT Kayla Lyon led off with a single, Cal State Fullerton-bound C Alexia Lopez got a one-out single and 2024 OF Marissa Morales walked to load the bases. 2022 2B/OF Jordan Elias got an RBI single. Then 2024 RF Emily Carr delivered a bases-clearing single to give the Mustangs the walk-off triumph.

Roosevelt coach Mike Smith became the first CIF-SS softball coach to take three different schools to championships. He has led Chino Hills (2005), Chino (2012, 2013) and now Roosevelt, which was in he finals for the second consecutive year, to titles. The Griffins were in the finals for the first time since 2017.

2022 SS Jazzy Santos and 2022 1B Taylor Johnson had RBI doubles to give Los Al a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.

Lopez’s RBI single in the bottom of the first for Roosevelt cut Los Al’s lead to 2-1.

2024 OF Callie Fitzpatrick, the #9 batter, hit a solo homer to left field in the top of the fifth to give the Griffins a 3-1 cushion.

Johnson crushed a solo homer to center field in the top of the sixth to increase Los Alamitos’ lead to 4-1.

That left the door open for Carr’s heroics in the last inning.

2024 P Pricilla Llamas allowed eight hits, four runs, one walk and struck out seven in seven innings to record the victory for Roosevelt. 2022 P Sydney Saldana allowed eight hits, five runs, six walks and struck out two in 6.1 innings to take the loss for the Griffins.

Hillcrest of Riverside, CA, 5, Elsinore of Wildomar, CA, 4: 2025 SS Melody Acevedo hit her 11th homer of the season with two outs in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie and give the Trojans (18-14) the victory over the Tigers (21-8) in the Division 6 championship game. Both teams were making their first appearances in the finals.

Cajon of San Bernardino, CA, 2, El Toro of Lake Forest, CA, 1 (8 innings): 2022 SS Kim Rodas delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth to help the Cowboys (24-6) defeat the Chargers (20-10) in the Division 5 championship game.

Rodas went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI, 2023 IF Mercedes Alba went 2 for 4 with a double and a run, 2022 3B/UT/OF KC Caldera went 3 for 3 and 2023 C Sonia Garcia went 2 for 2 with an RBI squeeze bunt for the Cowboys’ offense. 2024 P Jade Villegas allowed five hits, one run and struck out eight in eight innings to get the complete game win for Cajon.

Cajon won its second CIF-SS championship and was making its first trip to the finals since winning the Division 3 title in 2006. El Toro was in the finals for the first time since winning the Division 3-A title in 1990.

Capistrano Valley Christian of San Juan Capistrano, CA, 5, Linfield Christian of Temecula, CA, 1: The Eagles (27-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and 2025 P Kylee Cammarato got the complete game win as CVC beat the Lions (16-9) in the Division 7 final to win its first CIF-SS title in school history.

Linfield Christian was making its 10th appearance in the finals and first since 2001.
