At Extra Inning Softball, rankings are about more than recognizing the nation’s top fastpitch talent. They are about creating opportunities, celebrating achievement, and giving athletes and families confidence in the evaluation process.
That responsibility inspired the development of the SERV™ Methodology, a comprehensive framework designed to bring greater transparency, consistency, and accountability to athlete rankings.
But SERV™ was never intended to benefit the Rankings Committee alone. It was created to serve the entire softball community.
From athletes seeking recognition to parents navigating the rankings process, travel coaches advocating for their players, and college recruiters evaluating prospects, SERV™ establishes a more structured approach to recognizing talent nationwide.

What Is the SERV™ Methodology?
SERV™ stands for Software, Evaluate, Research, and Verify—four interconnected principles that guide Extra Inning Softball’s athlete evaluation process.
- Software: Proprietary technology organizes athlete information, analyzes statistical trends, and helps evaluators understand competition levels and performance history.
- Evaluate: Experienced Rankings Committee members assess athletic ability, position-specific skills, consistency, development, game impact, and future potential.
- Research: Evaluators examine tournament participation, verified statistics, video, historical performance, coach feedback, and other supporting information to develop a more complete picture of each athlete.
- Verify: Information is reviewed and cross-checked when necessary to improve accuracy before rankings are finalized.
Together, these four principles create a repeatable process that combines technology with experienced human judgment. The software supports the decisions. The people make them.
And that distinction matters.

Serving Athletes: Recognition Beyond Reputation
Every softball athlete develops differently. Some compete for nationally recognized organizations. Others represent smaller programs, emerging teams, or regions that receive less media attention.
Talent, however, is not limited to a particular organization, tournament, or geographic location. The SERV™ Methodology helps the Rankings Committee look beyond name recognition by evaluating athletic performance, competition level, development, and supporting information.
A player does not need the largest social media following or the most recognizable team logo to deserve consideration. She needs an opportunity for her accomplishments to be evaluated.
By incorporating position-specific rankings, regional recognition, and individual national placements, EIS works to recognize athletes for the contributions they make on the field.
The goal is not to reward popularity. It is to recognize performance and potential through a consistent evaluation process.

Serving Parents: Greater Transparency and Understanding
For parents, the rankings process can sometimes feel confusing.
Why was one athlete ranked ahead of another? How much do statistics matter? Does tournament competition influence placement? Are rankings determined by one person’s opinion?
These are reasonable questions. SERV™ provides families with a clearer understanding of how rankings are developed.
Rather than relying exclusively on statistics or subjective observations, the process considers multiple performance indicators and supporting information.
For example, a player batting .450 against nationally competitive pitching may be evaluated differently from a player batting .600 against less challenging competition. Neither statistic tells the complete story.
Strength of schedule, consistency, position-specific performance, video, and long-term development all provide important context. SERV™ does not guarantee that every parent will agree with every ranking.
It provides something more important: an established process that families can understand, question, and evaluate.

Serving Travel Coaches: Giving Their Athletes a Voice
Travel coaches invest countless hours developing athletes, preparing teams for competition, and helping players pursue their goals. Their firsthand knowledge is valuable.
Through SERV™ , coach feedback, organizational input, and athlete nominations contribute to the broader research process.
Coaches can provide information about an athlete’s role, competitive schedule, development, leadership, and performance that may not be immediately apparent through statistics alone.
Verification also creates opportunities to clarify information when questions arise.
This collaborative approach helps the Rankings Committee develop a more informed understanding of athletes competing across different organizations and regions.
Importantly, coach recommendations are considered alongside other evaluation factors—not treated as automatic rankings decisions.
SERV™ gives coaches an opportunity to contribute meaningful information while preserving the independence of the evaluation process.

Serving College Coaches: More Meaningful Recruiting Information
College coaches face the challenge of identifying prospective student-athletes from an enormous national talent pool.
Statistics, tournament schedules, video, athletic measurables, and positional evaluations all play a role in that process. SERV™ helps organize these factors into a more consistent rankings framework.
Position-specific evaluations are particularly valuable because the qualities that distinguish an elite pitcher are different from those that distinguish a catcher, middle infielder, or outfielder.
By considering competitive context and reviewing multiple sources of information, EIS aims to provide college coaches with more meaningful athlete recognition.
The rankings also connect with MyEIS360™ athlete profiles, where available, allowing coaches to explore additional information such as highlights, measurables, schedules, accomplishments, and recruiting details.
These profiles are free for college coaches and the public to view.
Rankings are not a substitute for independent recruiting evaluations. Instead, they can serve as an additional resource for discovering and researching prospective athletes. The objective is simple: make athlete discovery more informative, accessible, and efficient.

Serving the Community: Accountability Without Tied Rankings
One of the most significant decisions associated with the SERV™ Methodology was eliminating tied rankings.
Extra Inning Softball believes each ranked athlete deserves an individual placement based on the Rankings Committee’s evaluation.
Under the national rankings structure, qualifying athletes are recognized through three tiers:
Extra Elite 100 recognizes athletes ranked No. 1–100. Extra Select recognizes No. 101–200, while Extra Prospect recognizes No. 201–300.
Each athlete receives her own distinct ranking. This approach requires evaluators to make difficult distinctions rather than grouping multiple athletes under the same number.
It also increases accountability because every placement reflects a specific evaluation decision.
No methodology can eliminate disagreement, and rankings will always involve informed judgment.
However, SERV™ creates a framework for making those decisions with greater consistency and transparency.

Serving the Future: A Methodology That Continues to Improve
Perhaps one of the most important aspects of SERV™ is that the methodology is not considered finished.
Softball continues to evolve. Athletes develop, competition changes, technology improves, and new information becomes available. The evaluation process must evolve alongside the sport.
Extra Inning Softball continues to review feedback from families, coaches, athletes, and industry professionals to identify opportunities for improvement. That feedback helps shape enhancements to technology, research practices, verification procedures, and communication.
The goal is not to claim that every ranking will be perfect. It is to demonstrate a commitment to learning, listening, and improving with every rankings cycle. A credible methodology should not be measured only by the rankings it produces, but also by its willingness to improve.

Our Commitment: Empower. Inspire. Support.
At Extra Inning Softball, our mission is to Empower, Inspire, and Support the athletes and families who make this sport extraordinary. The SERV™ Methodology is one way we put that mission into action.
We will continue listening to the community, strengthening our evaluation process, investing in technology, and recognizing athletes whose dedication deserves to be seen. Because the future of softball deserves more than rankings built on reputation or opinion alone.
It deserves a process built on integrity, consistency, and continuous improvement. And that is how SERV™ is serving the softball community.
