Are Coaches Prioritizing Wins?

At Extra Inning Softball, we love bringing the fastpitch community together to discuss the sport’s biggest questions. Through our Dugout Discussions Polls, players, parents, and coaches share their opinions on important topics that shape the game. These polls highlight real concerns, spark insightful conversations, and provide a platform for every voice to be heard.

Our latest poll posed a key question:
Are coaches prioritizing wins over development by playing their best nine early in the season?

The results were eye-opening, revealing strong opinions on both sides of the debate. With over 54% of voters believing coaching decisions should be situational, it’s clear that there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Breaking Down the Poll Results

1. Situational Strategy Matters Most (54.35%)

The majority of respondents believe that team needs dictate coaching decisions early in the season. This perspective acknowledges that development strategies vary based on a team’s experience level, roster depth, and season goals. Coaches often balance early wins with long-term player growth, adjusting their approach based on their team’s potential.

2. Winning Takes Priority Over Growth (36.96%)

A significant portion of the community agrees that winning is the top priority early in the season. Coaches aiming for national recognition, strong tournament placements, or high rankings often feel pressure to put their best players on the field immediately. This approach ensures that teams build momentum and establish their dominance from day one.

3. Early Wins Build Team Confidence (6.52%)

Some voters argue that winning early is crucial for setting the tone for a successful season. A few big wins can boost morale, helping players feel more prepared and motivated for the challenges ahead. Teams that start strong often carry that momentum through the rest of the season.

4. Balancing Development and Competition (2.17%)

Only a small percentage of respondents believe that coaches successfully balance player development with competition. This suggests that many feel the balance is difficult to achieve in a highly competitive environment.

The Long-Term Impact on Player Development

This debate isn’t just about strategy—it’s about the future of young athletes. Tammy Young, head coach at Senatobia High School, believes the focus on winning over development is affecting the game at all levels.

“I am a high school coach, but my child plays 10U travel ball. I’ve noticed that most travel ball—and even some rec ball—coaches prioritize winning over development.

This creates a double-edged sword in travel ball. With so many teams competing, programs constantly hold tryouts and keep only the most developed players. As a result, late bloomers don’t always get the opportunity to grow, and many eventually give up the game.

As a high school coach, I see the long-term effects of this. We get players who struggle with fundamental skills like throwing and catching. As girls get older, those missing developmental years become more obvious. Players who relied on athleticism or flawed mechanics at younger levels often find they are no longer superstars—and, unfortunately, some lose their love for the game.”

Young’s perspective aligns with what many in the softball community have observed—early development gaps can follow players into their high school and college careers.

Why This Debate Matters

The balance between winning and development is a hot topic in softball. With competitive tournaments and college recruitment in play, teams are often expected to perform at their highest level as soon as the season begins. However, prioritizing early wins could come at the expense of developing younger or less experienced players who need game-time reps to improve.

What Experts Say About Player Development

According to the Positive Coaching Alliance, youth sports should focus on building skills and confidence while promoting healthy competition. Their research suggests that athletes thrive when they are given opportunities to grow rather than being judged solely on their ability to win games.

A similar perspective comes from NFCA, which emphasizes the importance of developing well-rounded players who can contribute throughout their careers rather than just in the short term. NFCA encourages coaches to create balanced lineups that allow every player to gain experience and confidence.
