Extra Star Power: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About 2022 Elite 100’s #1 Player Sam Roe!

Birmingham Thunderbolts players congratulate Sam Roe (middle) on #1 ranking in 2022 Extra Elite 100: (l-r) Hannah Dorsett, Katie Flannery, Sam Roe, Emmah Rolfe and Alea Johnson.

Last Friday—May 31, 2019—we finished our updated list of the 2022 Extra Elite 100 rankings and revealed that the top-ranked player is Florida catcher Sam Roe.

Sam committed to the Florida Gators in 8th grade and let’s just say she’s following in the footsteps of other #1 ranked top 100 players as selected by our Brentt Eads which includes Jenna Lilley (2014, Oregon), Amanda Lorenz (2015, Florida), 2016 Miranda Elish (2016, Texas) and many more… all the way down to the most recent selection, Mia Williams (2023, Florida)

Her talent on the field is outstanding, obviously, but so is her personality and character off of it.

Here’s a closer look at this outstanding freshman…

1. How She Learned to Ride a Bike…
When Sam was four-years-old, she asked her dad to take the training wheels off of her bike because her older siblings didn’t have them. He tried to get her to wait but she begged so he took them off.

Sam promptly jumped on her bike and fell over which made her cry so she picked the bike up over her head and threw it to the ground, then walked inside and yelled “I can’t ride it,” fell on the floor, got back up, went back outside and got on the bike and repeated the whole thing over again.

The Roe siblings, top left, clockwise: Samuel, J, Sam and Sandra Roe.

That was a long day but within a few hours Sam was riding her bike.

Says Sam: “Honestly I just remember thinking I should be able to ride this bike on my first try and it made me really upset I had to practice. Thank goodness I’ve outgrown that stage. Last year I really struggled with hitting change ups, but I didn’t throw my bat! (laughs) I worked really hard until I finally hit one out during a game.”

2. Adopted… And Hoping for More…
Sam is adopted and weighed a whopping 4.4 ounces when she was born. She has begged her parents for years to adopt another baby.

“I’m definitely not going to quit begging!” the athlete states. To read her thoughts on being adopted, click HERE.
