Morgan Waln is a young prospect to watch in the sport and was ranked #10 in the 2027 Extra Elite 100 rankings released last month.
Here’s what her bio had to say about the rising star:
T-10—Morgan Waln, OF/UT, Virginia Unity 14U – Johnson
Morgan, aka “Momo,” is an elite lefty thrower and hitter who possesses size and 5-tools. She is from Virginia, where she shines for Head Coach Josh Johnson and his Virginia Unity 14U-Johnson 2026 team—on which Morgan is the only ’27 grad. Coach Johnson adds: “In addition to her great softball skills, Momo brings an extremely high motor, a next level softball IQ and a ‘hate to lose” competitive mentality to her team.” The athlete has already caught the eyes of several Power 5 schools as she bat at the top of the lineup of a high profile and competitive team. Morgan’s been a standout pitcher throw in the upper 50’s, but chose to step away from the pitching circle this past season to focus on hitting and her defense. Also, she has a great family pedigree of softball with Morgan’s older sister Elizabeth playing at James Madison and Momo regularly hangs out with former JMU, USSSA Pride and Team USA invitee Jailyn Ford. Last Fall season in 23 games against strong competition across the Southeast, Morgan batted .458 with a .522 OBP and had 27 hits, 15 RBIs, 27 run scored and 20 bases stolen.
Extra Inning Softball recently caught up with the young athlete… here’s what she had to say:

Tell us about the Unity organization and how you became involved with them?
My oldest sister played for my head coach, Josh Johnson, for a while and I would always come to tournaments. I have always enjoyed hanging around the Unity organization and now it feels like home.

What was your experience at PGF Nationals like last summer (2022)?
It was some of the best competition I’ve seen, I loved it!
What tournament or event are you looking forward to this summer and why?
Colorado and PGF Nationals in California because those are going to be the biggest and probably the toughest softball tournaments out there.
Which player/team was your toughest opponent and why?
The Beverly Bandits… I just feel like since they won the PGF National Championship in California that they would be such a good team to beat.
What are you looking for in a future college?
A place that feels like home.
What areas are you interested in future occupations and why?
Really anywhere it takes me, I would love to be a nurse in the military. I’ve always been interested in nursing and the military so I could really travel the world.
Who is your sports hero and why?
Jaylin Ford (former James Madison pitcher 2013-2016)… she was my idol when I was little and still is to this day.
What’s the best hype song and why?
Rap! I love me some country, but rap just gets me going!
Do you have a secret talent/skill (doesn’t have to be sports-related)?
I can hold my breath underwater for a long time, it’s not really secret but it’s very hard to do for some people!
What’s your favorite TV show to binge and why?
Friends because it’s funny.
