High School: Kissimmee Klassic 2019… Championship Takes 11 Days Before Oakleaf Crowned For 3rd Year in a Row!

Oakleaf won the Kissimmee Klassic Blue Bracket title 11 days after it was supposed to have played for the championship. It was the team’s third Klassic championship in a row.

It took a while—11 days to be exact—but the champion of the Kissimmee Klassic’s elite Blue Bracket was decided Wednesday night and for the third year in a row it was the Oakleaf (Orange Park, Florida) High team bringing home the crown as the Lady Knights topped Bartow (Florida) High 6-1.

As we detailed in our coverage of the prestigious high school tournament on April 6 when most of the action wrapped up, rain and lightning pushed back the championship game that would have taken place between Oakleaf and Bartow until it was too late to play that Saturday night and the two finalists decided to postpone, rather than cancel, the title contest.

Instead of a coin flip to decide the victor, the teams decided to play on Wednesday night to decide the champion of the 2019 Klassic and it was a three-peat for the Florida high school power which was the Class 8A state runner-up in 2018 after taking the title in 2017.

“The championship game was rescheduled, because neither team wanted it to come down to a coin toss,” Oakleaf Head Coach Christina Thompson confirmed. “Bartow agreed to travel to us and we agreed to allow them to remain the home team.”

Madi Davis had a great tournament and is a repeat MVP.

The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and essentially that was all it would take for starting pitcher Madi Davis, a senior who was last year’s Klassic MVP. The Central Florida signee went all seven innings scattering six hits and striking out three while giving up just one unearned run, which game in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Davis would end up the Klassic with a 3-0-1 record, a 0.92 ERA and was also 7-for-15 at the plate with three doubles and seven RBIs.

“After our other pitcher went down in game one with an injury,” Coach Thompson explained, “Madi stepped up for every game. She crushed it at the plate as well and will be selected as the overall MVP for the tournament.”

In the first Davis would double for a pair of her four RBIs on the night after jr. Aspen Windesheim knocked in the first run of the game on an RBI single.

The Knights tacked on a run in the top of the 4th when jr. outfielder Jaeda McFarland would single home soph. Jadriana Serrano to make the score 4-0.

Oakleaf would end its scoring for the night in the 6th inning when Florida signee Baylee Godard would double and the bases would be filled with two consecutive hit batters before Davis singled home two more runs.

Baylee Goddard went 2-for-2 in the championship game and was 7-for-13 in the event overall.

After a two-out RBI single by Bartow’s leadoff hitter, sr. outfielder Haley Williamson, Davis struck out the final batter to give Oakleaf the third Kissimmee Klassic in three years.

Along with Davis’ pitching and hitting prowess, Goddard was also a key part of the Oakleaf run for the tournament as she went 7-for-13 with two triples, a double, six runs scored and three steals.

“Baylee was our fire power at the plate,” added Coach Thompson.

Despite a loss last Saturday to Lakewood Ranch, the current #1 in the Extra Elite Eighty High School Rankings, Oakleaf actually moved up from #7 to #6 in the national rankings in the interim and Bartow went from #36 to #27.
