Inside Pitch: 2025 Extra Elite 100 Shortstop Harlie Chism… “My Dream Comes with Sacrifices”

Harlie Chism dives safely into third.

Harlie Chism is a player on the rise—an incoming junior from Weatherford, Okla., who is already receiving recruiting letters from top schools nationally including Oklahoma and Oklahoma State at home as well as Washington in the Northwest, Texas in the Southwest and Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State and Tennessee in the Southeast.

The shortstop plays for the Oklahoma Athletics National 2024 team led by Brian Madden and Terry Clemmer.

Last Summer, playing for the A’s, Harlie made the Extra Inning Softball All-Summer Team at 16U when she batted .492 with a .532 OBP, .797 OBP, 1.329 OPS, 18 doubles, six triples, three homers, 51 runs and 23 RBIs to help Athletics National tie for 7th place at the 16U Alliance Nationals.

And just a week ago, the standout infielder helped her team win the Alliance Super Cup in Colorado where she was named as the Tournament MVP and awarded a new A2000 glove after batting over .800 for the event.

Her club coach, Brian Madden, says this of his star infielder:

“Harlie is one of the top middle infielders in the country,” he explains, “because she is a hard worker and is driven. Harlie goes about her business like a professional. The weight room is big for her, she trains all the time.”

“She is no doubt a Power 5 player not only in skill level but also in mentality, which we all know is the most important factor.”

In the previous edition of the 2025 Extra Elite 100 (which will be updated starting August 7), Harlie was ranked #26 overall and here’s what her bio said:

T-26—Harlie Chism, SS, Oklahoma Athletics National – Madden/Clemmer
Harlie has great range at short with a 68 mph overhand velocity and “makes difficult plays look simple,” according to Coach Terry Clemmer who adds: “Harlie is, without a doubt, one of the most competitive people I have ever met. She is incredibly self-motivated and has an extra gear that most athletes do not have. Harlie is max effort every pitch and her softball IQ is second to none.” For the A’s, the 2025 grad bats leadoff but also has the ability to take the ball over the wall boasting a 72-mph bat exit velocity. Harlie will tell you her biggest competitor is herself and, each and every day, she does twice the work to improve her individual accomplishments. The athlete chooses to wear “double deuces” just like Washington Husky great Sis Bates, whom she aspires to play like. In the classroom she maintains a weighted GPA of 4.50 as she strives to be valedictorian. As a freshman high school standout, Harlie batted .469 with a .515 on-base percentage and was chosen as an All-District shortstop.

Harlie lays out to make a diving catch in the grass.

In Oklahoma, athletes can get NIL deals as a high school player and the soon-to-be junior already has three with sponsorships from MAP Performance, National Scouting Report and D1 Supplements.

Austin Maine of MAP Performance says of Harlie: “She checks the boxes.”

Austin Maine, her personal strength and conditioning coach at MAP Performance, explains why his workout center is investing in the young fastpitch phenom.

“Very few athletes at the collegiate level—much less as an underclassman at the high school level—truly do what’s required to reach their full potential,” the trainer begins. “Rarely does an athlete stand out enough that they earn an NIL deal, especially in Western Oklahoma, but Harlie Chism is the first and potentially the only athlete that will receive an NIL deal from MAP Performance.”

“Within the first 20 minutes of sitting down with an athlete and family, as we do with every athlete we work with, I can tell you how far they’re willing and able to go. There’s an ‘it’ factor that anybody can have, but rarely do individuals allow themselves to express it. More often than not, fear and doubt stands in the way… but not for this girl.”

Harlie, he continues, is diligent about maintaining her diet and training, even though she has to make sacrifices.

“With the support Harlie has in place,” Maine explains, “her ability to execute her plan—oftentimes eating her meals she prepped cold out of the lunch box at tournaments to stay on her plan—constant data tracking from her stress tracking band to learn how to self-optimize her daily stress levels, the physical training she does at school, extra reps spent hitting and fielding, the special exercises she does on her own outside of school weight training, and a high desire to optimize her competitiveness and drive to win, Harlie checks the boxes.”

“When an athlete figures out how to cast a vision and execute the steps day-by-day to bring that vision to life, amazing things happen.”

“Whether she is competing alongside athletes her age in softball or being forced to step up and compete with collegiate athletes in training, she never backs down from the challenge. Harlie embraces all that is thrown at her and gives it everything she has.”

The 2025 grad isn’t just accomplished in softball—she’s also a standout in basketball and a state champion in track:

Still, softball is her future and her numbers bear that out: this year in travel ball, she batted .565 with an on-base percentage of .632 and has smashed 11 home runs. On defense for the Athletics, Harlie had a .960 defensive percentage and only made two errors all season.

Last Fall, in high school play the then-sophomore batted .506 with a .595 on-base percentage and smacked 11 home runs. And here’s a stat you don’t see everyday… Harlie hasn’t struck out even once in her first two years of school ball play!

Extra Inning Softball caught up with the ever impressive athlete to get her insights into the game she loves and what drives her to be the player she is today… and one to watch in the future!

Here’s what Harlie had to say…

*****

Growing up, I was never given the opportunity to choose which sport I wanted to invest my time and effort into. I was blessed with four siblings, two of which played college softball and baseball.

However, I’m also a triplet, so I have two brothers who never fail to push me past my limits!

I grew up playing baseball with the boys and I loved when they would ask their dads: “Can I use Harlie’s pink bat and helmet to hit?”

All the guys wanted to hit like I did. I was eventually converted to softball, and I have never looked back. When I began playing the game that I love, I never would have thought, in a million years, that I had the chance to play at the Division I level.

Harlie Chism enjoys the action on the field.

Softball was just something that I did on the weekends with my dad. We went to your typical rec ball complex where everyone wanted to be a pitcher and every game consisted of inside the park home runs.

Every year my family and I packed up our things to go watch the Women’s College World Series, and I just remember thinking, “Man, those girls are really good.”

I knew that that was the dream, but I didn’t realize what it took to get to that point.

As an athlete, there are a lot of things that distract you from your greatest potential. There are times– especially as a teenager—where you want just “to be a high school kid,” spend time with your friends or even just take a break.

However, my dream comes with sacrifices and softball only lasts so long. Daily, I do things to prepare me for what is to come or to better my game. At the same time, softball is not the only sport that I spend time with, and my teammates are not the only women who give me motivation.

I love to give fielding and hitting lessons to the younger generation, even if that means repeating myself 20 times before I finally get the point across!

“Your talent is God’s gift to you, what you do with it is your gift back to God.” – Leo Buscaglia

The love that I have for this game, the relationships I’ve made, and the places I’ve seen are unimaginable. I’m so thankful for this package in my heart and I wouldn’t want my dream to unfold any other way.

I’m so excited for the future and I hope that everyone else gets to experience their dreams.

Here is to giving back to God.
