National Coach Appreciation Day: Celebrating the Unsung Heroes of Softball
On October 6th, we celebrated National Coach Appreciation Day, a time dedicated to recognizing the unwavering dedication and commitment of coaches across all sports. For us at Extra Inning Softball, this day is particularly special as we honor the men and women who pour their hearts and souls into guiding young athletes, not only on the field but also in life. Coaches do more than teach the mechanics of the game—they build character, foster resilience, and inspire the next generation of leaders. Their influence often extends far beyond the game, leaving lasting impressions on the athletes they mentor. To show our gratitude, we asked softball players across the nation to share how their coaches have impacted their lives, both on and off the field. The responses we received underscore the immense value of these coaches, highlighting their ability to shape not only skilled athletes but also well-rounded individuals. Extra Inning Softball is deeply thankful for all the coaches who invest their time and energy into shaping young minds and building strong teams.
Coach Bam Donalson – Santa Fe Inferno 09 Donalson
Paige Bettermann reflects on how Coach Bam Donalson has been instrumental in her development as a pitcher. One of the most valuable lessons she’s learned from him is the importance of letting things go and focusing on the next pitch, something that is essential in the mental game of softball. Paige’s favorite memories with Coach Bam aren’t tied to a single event but rather the moments when she’s struggling on the mound and he steps in to calm her down, offering reassurance and guidance. She deeply appreciates the time and effort Coach Bam dedicates to ensuring the team has the opportunities they need to succeed. His ability to focus on the moment and move forward has empowered Paige to handle pressure better, both on and off the field.
Coach Eric Petruskie – Empire State Huskies 18u Premier
For Camryn O’Neill, Coach Eric Petruskie has taught her invaluable life lessons, most notably to never take anything for granted because life, like softball, comes in waves. One of Camryn’s favorite memories was winning their last fall tournament together, where the team celebrated with joy, and Coach Eric’s excitement was contagious. His constant belief in Camryn has set him apart from other coaches. Even in challenging moments, Coach Eric has always maintained faith in her, never giving up and always leading by example. Camryn credits him for inspiring her to push through adversity and for always being by her side as a mentor. His ability to work with her closely has empowered her to reach her goals both on and off the field, making him an irreplaceable figure in her softball journey.

Beyond the game, Presley is thankful to Coach Slade for molding her into both a better player and person. His commitment to always giving 110% for his team, even when he has personal sacrifices, sets him apart from other coaches. Coach Slade has empowered Presley to realize her full potential by constantly challenging her to push beyond her limits, and his leadership has inspired her to aim higher, both on the field and in life.
Coach Sandy Sciascia-Zirger – Impact Gold 08 GA
Skylar Campbell has carried with her one of the most crucial lessons Coach Sandy has taught her: persistence. Whether on the field or in life, sticking with something when progress is slow is a lesson she will never forget. One memory that stands out to Skylar was during a tournament in Florida, where Coach Sandy’s excitement spilled over after a game-winning hit, leading to an unforgettable celebration. Skylar deeply values how Coach Sandy cares for her not just as an athlete but as a person. Her support extends beyond the softball diamond, always focusing on Skylar’s growth as an individual. This dedication makes her stand out from other coaches.
