Deputy Tobin Bolter, honored by Owyhee High School for his service and sacrifice.
Owyhee High School: Salute to Service
On April 4, 2025, Owyhee High School softball hosted its first-ever Salute to Service Game in Meridian, Idaho. The event honored Deputy Tobin Bolter, a fallen officer with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office, during a home game against Eagle High School.
Held just miles from where I live, the event was not only powerful—it was personal. Before working full time for Extra Inning Softball, I worked in the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office, where I collaborated with deputies like Deputy Bolter. This made the tribute even more meaningful.
Who Was Deputy Bolter?
Deputy Tobin Bolter served in the Ada County Sheriff’s Office. Before that, he worked for the Meridian Police Department and the Pleasant Hill Police Department in California. Deputy Bolter lost his life after being shot while conducting a traffic stop in Boise, Idaho in April 2024. He was known for his courage and commitment to service. His passing deeply affected the local law enforcement community and citizens across Idaho.

John Carpenter, Owyhee head softball coach, shared with Extra Inning Softball:
“This game is an opportunity to teach young players what ‘selfless’ looks like in real life. At Owyhee this is taught in every sport at every level from our AD, Dane Roy, down through our coaches and players.”

The Salute to Service allows athletes to connect real-world values with their love for the sport. It encourages compassion, understanding, and appreciation for those who serve their communities.
Owyhee Softball Took Action
The OwyheeStorm players and coaches went above and beyond. They honored Deputy Bolter and his wife, Abbey, and their newborn baby girl, with a heartfelt pregame tribute. Families of both teams joined together in a show of unity and respect for law enforcement. Their efforts showed just how powerful sports can be in bringing people together for a greater cause.

I was so impressed with the respectful way players from both teams carried themselves throughout the game. As many officers from the Ada County Sheriff’s Office watched from the stands, there was a powerful sense of solemn duty and deep respect that could be felt across the field. It was more than just a game—it was a moment of unity and honor.

What This Means for Softball
This game wasn’t just about honoring one hero. It was a call to action for the entire softball community. It reminded us how important it is to serve others—not just on the field but in everyday life.
Softball programs have the power to make a difference. Whether through tributes, service projects, or community outreach, teams can help shape future leaders who value integrity, sacrifice, and service.
