Since last fall, we’ve told you about the Florida Gulf Coast League (FGCL) and the announcement that a collegiate softball league would start this summer to accompany the successful baseball summer league.
Last month, we also did an update where the first group of confirmed players was released in the article Florida Gulf Coast League Continues Plans to Play This Summer, Adds Top College Talent.
This week, one of the teams in the FGCL, the Bradenton Slice, has released its roster for the summer 2020 season with 14 athletes listed representing a variety of conferences including the ACC, AAC, CAA, SEC and ASUN in the NCAA. Participating athletes are also coming from the NJCAA, the SWJCC and FCSAA.
“My roster is full of talent,” said first-year head coach and former University of Arizona standout, Gina Snyder. “They’ll be a competitive group, but a fun one, too. With the cancelling of the 2020 college season, I’m sure everyone will be hungry to get back on the field, which will be a recipe for some great softball to watch and be a part of.”
“There have been so many ‘firsts’ happening in the sport of softball lately, and in women’s sports in general,” continued Snyder. “We are making history. This summer league has already been a game changer in growing the sport and I can’t wait to see the positive impact it will have, not only on the softball, but the athletes competing in the league as well.”
The FGCL is a 501C-3 organization based out of Bradenton, Florida. The league is comprised of both softball and baseball teams that compete primarily at locations in Manatee, Sarasota and Pinellas Counties on the gulf coast of Florida.
FGCL baseball played its inaugural season in summer 2019 while softball will start its season in June this year, pending approval from state and federal officials due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One FGCL official said on Tuesday: “The games are scheduled to begin on June 8, but we’re definitely looking at contingencies if Florida is still under restrictions. Our priority is the health and safety of our players, and we are optimistic that we’ll get the season in this summer.”
