Every October, the rivalry between the Falcons player groups to paint the best pumpkin gets better and better.
“It’s always fun to see the girls trade their bat in for a brush!” Head Coach Monte Sherrill told Extra Inning Softball of the team-unifying activity.
“Groups were chosen out of a bowl and given time to brainstorm and paint away,” the coach continued. “Our staff and students get a kick out of seeing them (the pumpkins) on campus as well as receiving the love and feedback from everyone who enjoys our World Championship Pumpkin painting contest!”
That’s not the only winning thing going on at the DIII powerhouse’s campus in Misenheimer, North Carolina, when it comes to the softball program.
Sherrill completed his sixth season in 2021-21 as the head coach of the Pfeiffer softball and now has a spectacular collegiate career record of 194-49 (.798).
To put this in comparison, add Sherrill’s fantastic high school record of 753-60 and you have an overall record of 931-109 (.895)—not to mention the 32 straight titles earned in the process including the 2021 USA South East Division championship.
Perhaps the secret to his success could be team bonding activities… like this one!
Here’s a look back on the two previous pumpkin contests that Extra Inning Softball was fortunate to be part of:

Once again, the works of pumpkin art are fantastic, but we still are particular to one special submission from 2019.
Why, you ask?
Because it… umm… well, we saw a side of Coach Sherrill we’d never seen before. We think you’ll understand what made us “crack” up when we saw it:
