Eastern Mennonite Mourns the Loss of Sara Monger

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Eastern Mennonite, and the Royals athletic department, suffered a devastating loss when first year student-athlete Sara Monger was killed in an automobile accident early in the morning of Oct. 28.

Monger, a softball player from Elkton, Va., died in a car accident in Harrisonburg early Saturday. Monger was described as a “hard-working and wonderful teammate” by EMU softball coach J.D. McCurdy.

Two other first-year students, Kendyll Eddins and Silas Gwathmey, were involved in the accident. Both sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are recovering.

Monger, an alumna of East Rockingham High School, leaves behind a legacy of academic excellence and athletic achievement. The high school community expressed their grief, remembering her as a model student who actively participated in various sports and activities. Described as a positive influence and leader in FFA, she excelled on the softball and basketball teams, leaving an indelible mark on her school.

In a statement, East Rockingham High School mourned Sara’s passing, highlighting her infectious daily smile and her genuine love for everything associated with East Rock. The school community’s heartfelt condolences go out to Sara’s family and loved ones. Sara Monger’s bright spirit, enthusiasm, and kindness will be deeply missed, and the communities she touched will remember her with love and admiration.

Eastern Mennonite University is located in Harrisonburg, Va., and its athletic teams compete as a member of NCAA Division III. The Royals athletic teams are members of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Other conference members include Averett University, Bridgewater College, Ferrum College, Guilford College, Hampden-Sydney College, Hollins University, University of Lynchburg, Randolph College, Randolp-Macon College, Roanoke College, Shenandoah University, Sweet Briar College, Virginia Wesleyan University and Washington and Lee University.
