Event News: Thunderbolts-Whitaker Rallies to Capture PGF Super Select 11U Championship (April 30, 2023)

Some of the top first-year 12U teams in the country were at the PGF Super Select 11U Championship double-elimination tournament Friday-Sunday in Columbia, TN. Here are some of Sunday’s highlights:

Birmingham Thunderbolts Premier 2029-Whitaker avenged its lone loss of the tournament, beatings LTG Lions 2029-Buck 8-4, in the championship game of the PGF Suoer Select 11U Championship on Sunday at Ridley Sports Complex.

The LTG Lions beat Thunderbolts-Whitaker, 6-2, in the sixth round, but Bolts-Whitaker picked up a 4-3 win over Hustle 2K11 National, the defending PGF Premier 10U national champion, in the consolation final to force the rematch.

2029 P/SS/3B Makayla Mann had a clutch triple in the top of the 5th to put the Thunderbolts up, 7-3, in the final. 2029 P/SS Rylee Swilley got the win for the Bolts, pitching a 6-inning complete game, giving up 9 hits, 4 runs, no walks and striking out 10, in the championship game. 

For the tournament, Swilley led the team with a .500 AVG and 9 RBIs and Mann batted .412 with a .565 OBP. Swilley had a 4-0 record with a 1.69 ERA and 28 strikeouts.

Thunderbolts-Whitaker defeated Wizards Elite 2011, 10-0, Alabama Sparks Elite 2011-Stewart, 1-0, Beverly Bandits Futures 2011-Madison/Perry, 7-0, Hustle 2K11 National, 3-2, lost to LTG Lions, 6-2, beat Hustle 2K11 National, 4-3, and LTG Lions, 8-4, in bracket play.

The LTG Lions beat Virginia Unity 2011, 12-1, Atlanta Premier Elite 2011-Bass, 3-1, Corona Angels 2011-Tyson, 8-4, Arkansas Thunder 2011, 6-5, Beverly Bandits Futures 2911-George, 6-3, Thunderbolts-Whitaker, 6-2, and lost to Thunderbolts-Whitaker, 8-4, in bracket play.
