Former IMG Teammates Share an Emotional Reunion

On April 9, 2025, two former teammates found themselves standing on opposite sides of the softball field for the first time in years—but this wasn’t just any ordinary matchup. When Karissa Hamilton, the starting catcher for the University of Kentucky, and Paige Maynard, a pitcher for Marshall University, saw each other before their teams faced off, time seemed to pause.

There are games that define athletes by performance—and then there are moments like this, where emotion and history create something unforgettable. This game wasn’t just Kentucky versus Marshall. It was two lifelong friends, bonded by years of travel ball, competition, and unwavering support, meeting again in the most surreal way: not as battery mates, but as rivals.

From Indiana Magic Gold to the NCAA

Hamilton and Maynard’s story began long before college. The two became teammates and best friends playing for Indiana Magic Gold, one of the top club programs in the country. Hamilton, ranked No. 22 overall and No. 7 catcher nationally in the Class of 2022 by Extra Inning Softball, and Maynard, the No. 25-ranked pitcher in the same class, spent seven years side by side on the field.

They were a constant. Catcher and pitcher. Teammates turned family. Whether it was staying at each other’s houses between tournament weekends or warming up together in pregame routines, they were inseparable.

“I was her catcher for seven years,” Hamilton said. “So seeing her in the other dugout was a little bit odd—but amazing too. It just reminded me how far we’ve come.”

The two had been counting down to the game for weeks. When the day finally arrived, the emotion was overwhelming. As Hamilton walked out to warm up, she spotted Maynard—and sprinted toward her.

“I got so excited,” she said. “We both got really emotional and didn’t expect to cry that much. That hug meant the world to both of us.”

The moment was caught on video—a hug, a smile, tears, and a bond that time or distance couldn’t break.

Best Friends Through Every Season

Maynard, now a junior at Marshall, reflected on what the moment meant from her side of the field.

“Seeing her across the field was something that was long due and didn’t feel real in the moment,” she shared. “Playing Kentucky yesterday was a full-circle moment.”

The two had dreamed about it back in their Magic Gold days, casually mentioning how cool it would be to one day play against each other in college. But when it actually happened, it was more than either expected.

“Our friendship means so much to me,” Maynard said. “She’s my best friend and has been since seventh grade. She’s been a huge part of my life through everything in softball—the highs, the lows. When I transferred, she was a source of comfort. Off the field, we’ve talked each other through every phase of life. I’m so lucky to have her.”

Coach’s Perspective: “They Were Always Together”

Coach John Lamar, who coached both Hamilton and Maynard during their final season with Indiana Magic Gold, witnessed the depth of their friendship and competitive drive firsthand.

“They were an absolute joy to coach,” Lamar said. “High-level players with zero attitude. They were always together—throwing partners, warming up together, and encouraging one another.”

Despite living in different states—Maynard from West Virginia and Hamilton from Indiana—the two made their friendship a priority. They’d ride home from tournaments with each other’s parents or stay over between events.

“They kept each other grounded,” Lamar added. “And when either of them struggled, they knew how to regroup and build each other back up. That’s the kind of relationship that defines a team.”

A Moment That Transcends the Game

For both athletes, the April 9 game was not about competition—it was about reflection. It was about looking across the field and seeing not just an opponent, but a piece of your past, a reminder of how far you’ve come.

Hamilton and Maynard each carry their own goals and dreams as they continue into the heart of their junior seasons. Hamilton is helping lead Kentucky in one of the toughest conferences in the nation, while Maynard is carving out a powerful legacy at Marshall. Yet, both carry something even more lasting than accolades: a friendship rooted in shared history and genuine love for the game.

“It didn’t feel like a rivalry,” Hamilton said. “It felt like a reunion.”

And that reunion, built on years of dedication, sacrifice, and celebration, served as a reminder to everyone watching: softball isn’t just about the wins. It’s about the people. The dugout talks, the road trips, the growth, and the relationships that outlast any final score.

Hamilton and Maynard: Full Circle

As they walked off the field that night—still wearing different jerseys, still playing for different schools—there was one thing that hadn’t changed: the bond between them. In a world that moves quickly, the game had given them a moment to pause and appreciate something priceless.

For Hamilton and Maynard, April 9 will never be remembered for who won the game.

It will be remembered for the hug, the tears, the friendship—and a love for softball that made it all possible.
