Madness Monday: Are Teams Playing Too Many Tournaments?
Texas Bombers Gold 14U catcher Olivia Salesberry fires to second base during summer tournament action.

Welcome to Madness Monday, our weekly dive into the debates firing up the fastpitch world. We skip the easy takes and go straight to the issues dividing coaches, parents, and players across the country.

This week’s question:
Should teams play fewer tournaments to reduce burnout?

Dugout Discussion Poll Results
82.35% — “Yes — quality over quantity.”

A dominant majority believes teams are wearing players down with overloaded schedules. Voters say fewer tournaments would create fresher athletes, better development windows, and stronger long-term performance.

5.88% — “No — reps are everything.”

This group argues that experience matters more than rest, and that the best players are forged through constant game reps and competitive volume.

11.76% — “Maybe — mix heavy and light weekends.”

Some prefer a balanced approach: heavy months, recovery months, and smarter scheduling rather than a one-size-fits-all answer.

Where the Debate Stands

Most of the fastpitch community agrees that burnout is real — mentally, physically, and financially. Families feel stretched, pitchers are logging too many innings too early, and players often finish the season exhausted instead of inspired.

But a vocal minority insists softer schedules won’t prepare athletes for elite competition. They argue the teams who play the most often win the most.

The middle ground? Smarter planning, intentional rest, and understanding that development doesn’t always happen in a tournament bracket.
