Friday’s doubleheader between Fresno State and Cal State Fullerton wasn’t a great one on the field for the Titans who lost 4-3 and 9-1, but it will be one that players, coaches and fans of both teams will remember for a long, long time.
Before the start of the doubleheader, Fullerton pitcher Taylor Dockins, who has been undergoing cancer treatment and has hit some medical bumps in her recovery journey, surprised everyone by attending the games and throwing out the ceremonial first pitch before the start of the doubleheader.

Friday’s appearance was the first time in over a year Taylor had been in a Titan uniform and her time spent with the team brought a lot of smiles—and appreciative tears—to many who were fortunate to be in attendance at the first day of the Judy Garman Classic hosted by CSF.
Debi Dockins, Taylor’s mother, told Extra Inning Softball this morning:
“Yesterday went perfect! Taylor had her uniform ready to put on (a surprise), she got to throw the first pitch, and CSUF has green ribbons (representing liver cancer) on the field. The support and love from Fresno State and CSUF has touched Taylor’s heart. She shared with excitement every detail with us and the light that shined within her when she got home, I was moved by her joy!
The chance to be on the field and be with her teammates was an emotional and spiritual boost for Taylor, who has been an inspiration and role model to so many in the sports world.
“When you go through such hard times,” her mother added, “you feel some disconnect. With COVID it was even harder and then four months in the hospital… Taylor needed to reconnect with her sisters. This is a reboost for sure.”
