Katie Kutz holds the home run ball she hit into a 20-mph wind!
Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week

*  Sometimes it’s not just the stats, but who they’re against, when and how you get the job done that is special.

Katie Kutz, a junior pitcher/DP for Bishop O’Connell High in Arlington, Virginia, pitched her team to four wins last week but that barely scratches the surface on what the Oklahoma State verbal did in her team’s first week of the season.

Two of her four wins were no-hitters and one of her wins, in Game 3, was against the defending Virginia Div. 2 state champs and the Game 4 win was against the Virginia Div. 3 defending state champion.

And they were back-to-back on the same day.

For the week, Katie pitched 27 innings and had 63 strikeouts against just one earned run and one walk. Opponents hit just .057 against her and in her all four games she had double digit numbers of strikeouts: 10, 16, 15 and 22.

And that’s just half the story: she helped her own cause by batting .533 (8-for-15) with an OPS of 1.496 and one home run, but again… it was the timing of that shot that was key: it game in the bottom of the 7th inning to tie a game and was into a 20-mph headwind. Then, Katie singled in the bottom of the 9th to start the winning rally.

“She was jaw dropping,” Head Coach Suzy Willemssen said of her junior star’s performances. “In less than 24 hours she threw 22 innings with 53 K’s and the Saturday wins were back-to-back. There was no-break, but she wanted it. She’s just such a competitor!”

Runner-Up National Players of the Week
Gracie Turner

* Gracie Turner, a senior outfielder for Sequatchie County High in Dunlap, Tennessee, helped the Lady Indians to a 5-1 start to the season in a big way.

In the six games, she went 14-17 for an .824 average and scored eight runs, had six RBI, three doubles and two walks.

Gracie has helped Sequatchie County to the Class AA state tournament the last two years the tournament has been played, her freshman and junior seasons. The team has six seniors and is seeking another trip to State before heading off to college–for Gracie, she will attend the Univ. of Tennessee.

* Sophia Marrero, a senior catcher for El Segundo (Calif.) High went 9-for-15 (.600) with four home runs, three doubles and eight RBIs and her final season has been particularly rewarding after she suffered an injury mid-way through her junior year.

Along with frustrating COVID lockdowns, the Niagara University commit had to deal with hours of physical therapy and training to get back on the field.

Sophia was also chosen and will be representing her heritage by playing for Team Cuba this summer in the TCS International Challenge.

Summer Scarmado

* Senior twin sisters Sage and Summer Scarmardo of College State (Texas) High are having a friendly competition to see who can put up the better numbers and the Lady Cougars are the better for it as the Purdue Boilermaker signees—both of whom are in the 2022 Extra Elite 100—had huge weeks.

Sage is the shortstop and leadoff hitter and in two district games last week went 5-for-6 (.833) with a home run, four runs scored and two RBIs and is hitting .676 for the season with 25 hits, 27 runs scored, the home run, six triples, eight doubles, six RBIs, 15 steals and an impressive .963 fielding percentage in 54 total chances.

She is currently leading the Texas Region II District 19 in batting average, slugging percentage, runs, on-base percentage and steals.

Summer, who bats second in the Lady Cougars lineup and plays third, batted .667 last week with three doubles and four runs scored and is hitting .409 overall with 18 hits, 11 RBIs, four doubles, three triples, a home run and seven steals. She has also shined on defense with four double plays turned on the season.
