Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week

* Senior catcher/infielder Tanya Windle of Cactus (Glendale, Arizona) High, who will play for Dixie State University in the Fall, has had a season to remember… and she’s only 10 games in.

Tanya has put up huge offensive numbers but knows her role is also to lead her young team.

Last week, she went 7-for-8—an .875 batting average which is impressive enough—but of her seven hits, six of them were home runs! And the other was a double.

For the season now, in 10 games, she has 13 home runs and 31 RBIs… and, oh yea, her batting average is a healthy .806 as well.

In a big win on March 9, Tanya went 5-for-5 and all five were home runs. She drove in 12 runs that game and has only had two games this season where she hasn’t driven in at least one run. And here’s a stat you may never see again: she’s gone 25-for-31 at the plate to start the year.

And that five-home run effort…. what did Tanya think of her game for the record books?

“I was looking to drive the ball so my team would get fired up,” she explains, “It just led to hitting homers and the more my team got fired up the better we all did.”

Not surprisingly, her other numbers are astronomically high as well: a .824 on-base percentage with a 2.387 slugging percentage and a 3.211 OPS.

The Cobras have won six state titles at the 4A level but are struggling a bit this year with a 5-5 record and Tanya knows she has to do more than just put up huge numbers—she has to be a senior leader.

“We have a young team this year,” the athlete with a 3.8 GPA explains, “so I’ve learned to be patient and more of an on and off the field leader. Getting everyone to gel has had its challenges but we are definitely headed in an upward direction.”

Runner-Up National Players of the Week
Kiki Estrada, headed to Arkansas, had 3 home runs last week.

* Kiana “Kiki” Estrada, a senior first baseman who has signed with Arkansas, batted .583 last week with three home runs, a double and six RBIs.

Going 7-for-12, she helped lead her Orange Lutheran (Calif.) High team to a 5th place finish in a tournament in Arizona and now for the season is hitting .484 with four home runs and an on-base percentage of .628.

* Khloe Banks, a senior outfielder for Oakleaf High in Orange Park, Florida, went 5-for-6 (.833) with five RBIs and two steals but her most memorable accomplishment had to be hitting a triple and home run in the same inning!

The Purdue signee is hitting .692 and has five steals in her team’s first three games.

She will be the second in her family to compete athletically in the Big Ten; her brother, Sevyn Banks, has been a starting cornerback at Ohio State the last two years.

* Senior pitcher RyLee Crandall from Artesia (New Mexico) High, who was last year’s Gatorade State Player of the Year and has signed with Baylor, went 4-0 last week with three shutouts and had 39 strikeouts.

She’s also helped her cause at the plate as she batted .647 with six RBIs.
