Should 14U+ Adopt a Game-Changing Watch List?

The conversation around how best to recognize softball athletes continues to evolve, and Extra Inning Softball recently conducted a poll asking an important question: Should we transition to a “Watch List” format for players 14U and older instead of traditional rankings? The results are in, and they reflect a range of perspectives from the softball community.

Poll Results: What the Community Thinks

Jazz Jackson, the head of the Impact Gold Travel Ball organization, shared her thoughts on the concept of a “watch list” for players, which she believes is a great way to promote growth and recognition in the sport.
“I personally like the idea of a watch list. I think, as travel ball coaches, leaders, and advocates, we should use the same language that will be used for these PSAs throughout the rest of their careers. Most national awards start with a watch list or pre-season list, and since we don’t really have an off-season, I think a watch list is the best verbiage to use.”
The concept of a watch list serves a dual purpose—it not only recognizes players who are showing potential but also leaves room for them to develop further. This approach allows players to mature and grow, providing a chance to be considered for awards and recognition each calendar year without the pressure of seeing their performance numbers fluctuate drastically. It also fosters a spirit of community rather than individual competition, encouraging players to focus on collective progress instead of just personal achievement.
By promoting a watch list, coaches and leaders can create a more inclusive environment, where players are seen as part of a larger effort to improve and succeed. After the season, these watch lists can be used to reward players based on their performance, ensuring that recognition is earned through dedication and teamwork.

Here’s how voters responded:

  • Yes, switch to a Watch List format. It’s less stressful for players and still highlights their achievements (54.91%)
The majority of respondents expressed support for transitioning to a Watch List format for players 14U and older. They believe this approach can reduce the pressure rankings place on players while still celebrating their accomplishments.
  • No changes. Continue to rank older players (14U+) and use Watch Lists for younger athletes (10U–12U) (31.90%)
A significant portion of voters preferred the current system, which balances traditional rankings for older players with Watch Lists for younger athletes. For these respondents, rankings provide structure and recognition for older players during critical recruiting years.
  • Undecided. I see merits in both systems and would like to hear more feedback from coaches, parents, and players before forming an opinion (8.59%)
Some voters remain undecided, acknowledging the potential benefits of both systems. They emphasize the need for further discussion and input from the community before making a decision.
  • No, keep traditional rankings. Ranked lists add value and provide clear recognition (4.60%)
A small but vocal group of voters advocated for keeping traditional rankings intact, citing their importance in providing clear recognition for standout players.

Highlighting the Pros and Cons

The debate over Watch Lists versus traditional rankings brings up several key points. Supporters of Watch Lists believe they create a more inclusive environment, where players are recognized without the added pressure of being ranked against their peers. This format also allows for a broader celebration of talent across regions and positions.

On the other hand, traditional rankings provide a clear and structured way to measure a player’s performance and achievements. For many, rankings serve as a valuable tool for recruiting and give players concrete goals to strive toward.

Both systems have their merits, and the decision ultimately depends on what serves the athletes and the softball community best.
