In Memorium: Remembering 2027 Extra Elite 100 Infielder Morgan “Mo” Wilson, Who Died In December at Age 13

Members of the Impact Gold 08 team in Georgia, like others in their organization nationwide, have dedicated this year to Morgan “Mo” Wilson who died suddenly and tragically at age 13 just days before last Christmas.

This is our last week looking at the current Extra Elite 100 for the 2027 class after we announced the Top 10 last Friday.

One who would have definitely made that list was Morgan “Mo” Wilson, a wonderfully talented infielder who starred for the Impact Gold organization and the teammate of the player who came out as the No. 1 overall player Macie Bryant.

To keep Mo’s story strong related this class, we run the profile we did on “Mo3” shortly after her passing last December, three days before Christmas.

Mo had helped lead her team to an Alliance 12U National Championship just months before and the Louisiana native was ranked in the Top 30 of her class (see her bio write-up below). So bright was her future and, thus, so painful when she left us tragically at just age 13.

Whenever I think of the 2027’s, I will always think of and remember Mo–for her talent, sure, but also her radiant smile and how much she meant to people off the field of play as well as on it.

The Impact Gold organization had dedicated the 2023 season to Mo with the hastag #playforMo3.

Congrats to those that did–and will make–the Class of 2027 and we look forward to a wonderful Summer of softball, but also remember Mo, her family, friends and teammates and honor them through our continued love and dedication to this wonderful sport.

Softball Tragedy: 2027 Extra Elite 100 Infielder Morgan “Mo” Wilson of Alliance 12U National Champion Impact Gold Dies at Age 13

Originally published Dec. 28, 2022

Morgan Wilson, a key member of the Alliance 12U Championship-winning Impact Gold National 2K9 team, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2022.

Heartbreaking news from the club softball world as Morgan “Mo” Wilson, a talented Class of 2027 infielder/utility player on the Impact Gold National 2K9 team—winners of the Alliance 12U Nationals this past summer—has died (cause of death hasn’t been released).

Morgan was a middle schooler from Alexandria, Louisiana, and was a multi-sport star as she also excelled in basketball, averaging 25-30 points per game as well as being selected to the 13U team on the 2022 USA Softball High Performance Program (HPP) announced earlier this month (click HERE to see the complete list).

Her funeral services will be held this Friday (December 30) at 11 am at the Zion Hill Church in Pineville, Louisiana.

When Impact Gold Head Coach Jared Bryant spoke with Extra Inning Softball earlier today, he explained that he and his team were still in shock at the horrible news.

“We’re just up and down,” the title-winning coach–whose daughter, Macie, pitches for the Impact Gold team–said this afternoon. “We’re just trying to keep things normal.”

Coach Bryant commented on how special Morgan to coach:

“Softball was huge for Morgan, and she was one of the most athletic 13-year-olds in the country. Although she was close to 6-foot, Mo was the third fastest on our team and could hit and make plays that kids shouldn’t be making at that age. Down the road, Morgan would have had colleges fighting over her.”

Here is her bio for the 2027 Extra Elite 100 Top 30 published in February:

Morgan is a fast-rising prospect in the Class of 2027 and comes from Pineville, Louisiana to play for the Impact Gold program based in Texas. She’s a “true utility player,” according to Program Director Jazz Jackson Vesely who adds: “Morgan is a dual threat with tons of power in hitting long balls and was a leader last Fall as well with her slugging and on-base percentages.” Last year, the Bayou standout batted .472 with runners in scoring position and came up big time and time again with clutch hits, including 16 two-out RBIs. Morgan had 54 RBIs in 60 games played and has impressed scouts with her 75-mph exit velocity and long-distance strength, with one ball measured at 232 feet. Defensively, she has the skills to play anywhere in the infield or outfield and, when not on the softball fields, is a standout for her school’s basketball team where she’s a co-captain.

At the Alliance Nationals (12U) in July, the third baseman hit .364 with two home runs and drove in 13 runs.

We will have more on Morgan, including insights and favorite memories from her coaches and teammates, in the near future. Thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.

Travel Ball Highlights/Summer Stats: .496 AVG, 115 hits, 1.387 OPS, 15 HRs, 9 triples, 101 RBIs, 91 runs, 33 SBs and 41 extra-base hits.

Tell us about your travel team/organization and how you became involved with them? IG2K9 National was a team that my local travel ball team in Louisiana played several times. It was just “something” about the coaches and girls that seemed unbreakable and I wanted to be a part of it! When my season ended with my old team, my parents reached out for a tryout. The rest is history! It’s been great being truly accepted and a part of the team. We all fit so well together no matter the distance.

What do you bring to the team? I feel like I bring power with my batting; quickness on defense; and a big smile in the dugout!

Morgan Wilson

What areas were you focusing on/trying to improve this summer? I always work on my batting to make sure I am helping my team bring in runs. I also am working on drills to be able to play defense wherever the coaches put me.

Can you tell us about your experience at this past Alliance Nationals? It was so amazing being able to play in the same arena as the Women’s College World Series. It was even better being a part of a winning team! I felt like we worked so hard to get to this very moment!

Which player/team was your toughest opponent and why? Iowa Premier, because they won against us earlier in the tournament and were watching us, waiting. They had so much to prove so they fought back hard.

What are your goals for the future? My goals are to play softball in college. I would love to play on any stage and maybe coach younger girls to give them this amazing feeling of the game. I also want to be an Orthodontist when I grow up.

Who is your sports hero and why? Shemiah Sanchez. She was such a natural at softball from when she was young. She was sick during her college time and not everyone even knew it. Everyone loved her smile and her love for the game was huge! She always dreamed big and she was so kind and down to earth meeting her in person years ago.

What’s the best hype song and why? The best hype song is “Fish Scale” (by YoungBoy) because it was like our bonding song. Everyone even learned the dance to it and we did it before every game.

Do you have a secret talent/skill? Everyone says I have a “goofy, contiguous laugh” … I’m a great listener and everyone seems drawn to me. I just know how to make people smile.
