Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week

*  You have to be pretty good to earn National Player of the Week honors in two separate years, but that’s what pitcher/infielder Madison Inscoe of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy in Suffolk, Virginia, has done.

Last week, the North Carolina State signee went 2-0 in the circle as she faced 44 batters and struck out 37 of them… 84 percent of all batters she faced.

In the three games played, Madison pitched in the two wins and also played shortstop in the other with no errors and, significantly, make a diving catch to save her pitcher’s no-hitter.

Madison helped her cause with her bat which included a pair of home runs.

Of the senior’s two pitching wins, one was a 20-strikeout perfect game while the other saw her strike out 17 and give up no earned runs.

Madison, who is a two-time Virginia State champion, helped her own cause too as she went 6-for-9 (.667 average) at the plate with two home runs, a triple and three singles to knock in four RBIs.

For the season, she has 64 K’s on 30 innings with an ERA of 0.23 and only one walk given up. Opponents are hitting just .091 against her while Madison is also batting .478 with no errors in the field.

We also asked Madison if she knew she was throwing a perfect game at the time.

“I realized it sometime during the 4th inning,” she explained, “but quickly put it out of my mind. Like most pitchers, I think most of us sort of think, ‘Let’s not say it out loud’ so we don’t jinx it.  And we certainly don’t say ‘I have a perfect game going through four!”

“Thankfully, no one on the team or the coaches said anything to me either,” she continued. “I’m not a superstitious person, but there some softball lines you just don’t cross and there is an element of the superstition that has been around this sport for a long time!”

Last year—on April 20, 2021—Madison was named the National Player of the Week (click HERE to see the complete write-up) after she threw three shutout pitching performances with 28 strikeouts in 12 innings and allowed just two hits with no walks while hitting four home runs and batting .800 on the week.

Runner-Up National Players of the Week

* Jayden Heavener, the super sophomore pitcher for Pace (Florida) High, pitched two no-hitters last week and when you add another one in on Monday that’s three in a row!

Jayden Heavener has pitched three no-hitters in a row!

The Patriots hurler racked up 54 strikeouts in the 20 innings pitched in those three games (yes, we know Monday’s doesn’t technically “count” for last week, but still!

In one of the game’s, she hit a batter in the 7th inning or she would have had a perfect game. And her pitching was just half the story: she also went 7-for-8 with three walks and knocked in three runs.

In the two games from last week, Jayden threw 14 innings with 39 K’s versus just two walks and had no hits allowed and a 0.00 ERA while batting 5-for-6 (.833) with three doubles and three RBIs.

Her mother, Denise, told us earlier today:

“Everything has just been clicking for Jayden, she’s seeing and working with her pitching and hitting coach weekly and the team is firing on all cylinders together.”

* Linsdey Mullen, a 2023 right-handed pitcher and first baseman for Tuscarora High in Leesburg, Virginia, has only given up three hits in her first five games.

In 5.2 no-hit innings last week in one game, she struck out 17 of the 19 she faced and had 28 K’s in 11.2 innings pitched for the week while to date has 56 K’s in 21 innings.

The Louisville commit also leads her Huskies team with seven RBIs.

KG Walker is batting an amazing .773 for the season so far.

* KG Walker, a 2024 catcher for McCracken County High School in Paducah, Kentucky, has helped her team jump out to an 8-0 record and #1 ranking in the Blue Grass State.

Last week, she went 11-for-16 with a .688 batting average and had two home runs, 12 RBIs, and an on-base percentage of .647.

She also didn’t make an error in 42 chances while having 37 put-outs and two picks. Knowing KG’s reputation, no base runner tried to steal against her.

For the year, the standout sophomore is hitting .773 on 17-for-22 hitting and has three home runs and five doubles to go with 16 RBIs. Her other numbers are also top shelf: a .708 on-base percentage, a 2.117 OPS and a 1.409 slugging percentage

“I have been hitting and playing well because Coach Tony (McCracken, the team’s head coach) prepares us to be ready,” KG told Extra Inning Softball this week.

“With the practicing he does and the work that I do on my own, I am prepared… I just have to execute. Our team is special and we have each other’s back. We want to succeed for each other.”

* Olivia Conley, a 2024 pitcher for Bartram High (St. John’s Co., Florida) went 3-0 last week with a 0.00 ERA in 17 innings.

In one shutout, she threw just 37 pitches and for her efforts was named a top pitcher in the North Florida area by the Times Union.

So far in ’22, Olivia is 7-0 with a 0.60 ERA and 39 K’s in 35 innings.
