Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player of the Week

*  Rose Malen, a senior pitcher for Marin Catholic High in Kentfield, California, was a strikeout machine last week as she dominated both as a starter and reliever.

Rose, a Chapman University signee, knows what it’s like to pitch in big games as she helped lead her West Bay Warriors 16U travel ball team to the 16U Alliance Nation Championship last year (click HERE to read the story on the title win).

And she’s continuing to dominate as she’s progressing through her senior campaign. Last week, Rose ran her record to 9-1 on the season with two seven-inning wins as she struck out 17 opposing batters in one game and then 19 more in the next.

Rose Malen’s strikeout totals have been impressive this season but she’s also only allowed one walk in 53 innings.

For good measure, she also pitched two innings of relief and recorded six more K’s.

That’s 16 innings pitched for the week with no runs allowed and just five hits given up with 42 strikeouts in total—do the math and that’s over 2.6 K’s per inning.

For the season, Rose has 116 K’s in 53 innings pitched, with an impressive 0.39 ERA as she’s allowed just one walk and three earned runs all season.

“Rose has been amazing this season and especially this week,” says Dave Albini, the Marin Catholic High Head Coach, “starting with a 17-strikeout game against San Marin, a top team in our league, and finishing up with a 19 strikeout game against St. Ignatius… and that was with our team missing several key players.”

“Sandwiched in between those wins a relief appearance where she struck out all six batters she faced and Rose has clearly been our MVP thus far and someone we count on every time she takes the mound,” the coach added.

Sammy Horn, a junior teammate of Rose’s who is committed to Boston College, echoes her coaches complimentary words.

“We are so lucky to have a pitcher like Rose,” adds Sammy, “as she keeps us in every game.  She is the heart of the team.”

Runner-Up National Players of the Week
Madison Runyan

* Madison Runyan, a senior MIF/OF at West (Texas) High and a Maryland signee, had a big week at the plate as she went 6-for-8 with two triples, two doubles, a home run and nine RBIs.

Not surprisingly, her other numbers—including a 1.875 slugging percentage and her 2.675 OPS—were equally impressive.

* Abby Chandler, a senior infielder for Jefferson (Indiana) High, batted .833 with three home runs and a triple and knocked in eight RBIs in her team’s first pair of games this season.

Abby was named the NFCA North Region Player of the Week for her strong opening games as she had a 2.667 slugging percentage and a 3.381 OPS.

Hannah Marien

* Hannah Marien, a senior pitcher and outfielder for Lake Brantley (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) High, had a great week for her team which jumped up into the Top 5 of the Extra Elite 80 High School Rankings last week after twice defeating previous #1 team Lakewood Ranch.

Hannah had a huge week as she pitched 10 innings and didn’t give up an earned run in the two wins while striking out 10. She allowed five hits and eight walks and ran her record to 6-0 on the season with 70K’s in 46 innings.

The Stetson-bound pitcher also helped her cause with a pair of doubles and two RBIs in the big team wins. For the year she is batting .333.
