A common site in Central Texas this year: Madilynn George of Rouse High crushing the ball!

More and more states and schools are hitting the high school fields as we’ve officially hit Spring as of yesterday (Sunday, March 20).

In Week 6 of our 2023 National High School Player of the Week series for the Spring campaign, we again honor those athletes who have shined on the field over the last week.

Each Tuesday for the next several months we’ll honor top performances nationwide; if you’d like to have a player considered, scroll down to see how to fill out a nomination.

Games are for Sunday, Mar. 12, 2023 through Saturday, Mar. 18, 2023

Note also that these players having great weeks will also be in consideration for our Extra Inning Softball All-American Teams to be released later this year!

Extra Inning Softball’s National High School Player(s) of the Week

* There is respect and then there is the “No thanks, have a free pass on me!” respect pitchers in Central Texas are showing this year, not wanting to take a chance facing a dangerous power hitter at the plate.

Madilynn “Maddog” George is just a sophomore at Rouse High in Leander, Texas, but her reputation has definitely proceeded her this year after she was tabbed as the All-Centex Newcomer of the Year in 2022 and 1st Team All-District when she batted .554 with six home runs (as part of 18 extra base hits) and 36 RBIs.

Madilynn George was the 2022 All Cen-Tex Newcomer of the Year

This year, the lefty first baseman—who also throws the shot and discus in track and owns Rouse school records in both already!—has been so highly respected that, kicking off District play two weeks ago she was intentionally walked seven out of her eight at-bats, never seeing the batter’s box while being pointed to first base, and in the one instance she DID get to see some pitches, she hit an RBI single.

Last week, brave opponents chose to challenge her and that didn’t end up so well, as Madilynn went a perfect 6-for-6 with three home runs, two doubles and a single.

A familiar site as Madi is welcomed home by her team after another home run.

All-told, she was hitting a perfect 1.000 in District play entering this week with a trio of homers and seven RBIs in four games. For the complete season so far, “Maddog” is hitting an impressive .585 with 10 home runs in 53 at-bats and 70 plate appearances totaling 31 hits and 16 walks, giving her an OPS of 2.077.

Madi says she’s seeing the ball come in “like a beachball.”

Not surprisingly, she told Extra Inning Softball that she’s seeing the ball pretty darn well right now.

“I put lots of focus into my pitch selection and when I find my zone and see the pitch, it comes in like a beachball,” Madi says.

And now, when opposing teams do choose to face her, they also have to watch out for another aspect of her game where she can get on base.

“Yes, I always hit for power,” she continues, “but I can put a bunt down too if my team needs me to do so.”

“Maddog” also attributes her strong start to time working on her game prior to this spring.

“I worked very hard in the off season such as going to the cages and getting work in with my Dad,” she adds. “Lately, I have been intentionally walked in almost every single at-bat of District play and this makes it harder for me to get opportunities to hit. Getting walked so much is a struggle to my mental game, but I have used it to hype my team up and see the walk as a compliment of my abilities.”

During the summer season, Madilynn competes for the Blaze United 16U team and below is a clip of one of her massive home runs from last week:
